OCR Reader for Port Label Scanning
This project required building a low cost OCR reader that can be deployed across multiple warehouse dock and conveyor points. The module needed to scan shipment/container labels, read barcodes and QR codes, and send the extracted data directly into a Warehouse Management System. The solution also had to support software upgrades so OCR accuracy and label handling can improve over time without changing the hardware.
A compact OCR reader module was developed on a Raspberry Pi platform with a high resolution camera. The device captures label images, runs a combined OCR + barcode/QR decoding pipeline in real time, and publishes results to the WMS through a REST API. Secure OTA updates were included to allow remote upgrades of the OCR pipeline and models, keeping the deployment scalable and maintainable.
The solution made multi point scanning practical by reducing per station cost while keeping performance strong enough for live operations. Unified extraction of text, barcode, and QR reduced dependency on multiple scanners or tools. REST based integration enabled quick WMS connectivity and standardized scan outputs. OTA updates ensured the system stays future-ready, allowing continuous improvements and support for new label formats without hardware replacement.
