Smart Helmet Camera for Construction Sites
Construction safety teams were struggling to understand what was really happening across large, multi-level sites in real time. They had no easy way to monitor whether workers were consistently wearing helmets and vests, entering restricted or hazardous areas, or facing unsafe conditions, often realising problems only after reviewing CCTV footage once an incident had already occurred.
Workers in high risk zones had no simple way to alert supervisors, share what they were seeing during emergencies, or capture video directly from their own point of view, creating a clear need for a smarter, worker-centric safety solution.
An Android SOM with an ARM processor and onboard GPU was built directly into the helmet, handling all video processing and AI inference on the device. A wide-angle camera integrated into the helmet visor captured the worker's point-of-view video feed continuously throughout the shift.
A high-sensitivity GNSS receiver tracked each worker's real-time location on a live site map, while a 4G LTE modem handled video streaming and alert transmission across the construction site.
An on-device PPE detection model continuously analyzed the video feed to verify helmet and safety vest compliance, automatically flagging any violations without manual supervision.
All data was consolidated into a web-based site dashboard, giving supervisors a live worker location map, real-time video feed, and alert inbox in one place. Workers could also trigger an SOS alert directly from the helmet, instantly notifying the operations team with their live location and video feed.
Safety teams gained real-time visibility into on-site conditions, allowing them to identify and respond to potential risks as they happen rather than relying on post-incident reviews or CCTV footage.
From a single dashboard, supervisors could instantly check PPE compliance across all workers, identify anyone in restricted or high-risk areas, and respond to SOS alerts with the worker's live location and video feed immediately available.
This shift from reactive to proactive monitoring significantly improved the speed and effectiveness of on-site safety management, reducing the time between an incident occurring and the operations team being able to act on it.

Real-Time Awareness
Instead of waiting for delayed reports or CCTV reviews, safety teams could now monitor live on-site activity in real time.
Rapid Response
With SOS alerts, live video, and real-time location available in one dashboard, supervisors could respond to incidents much faster.
Safety Compliance
Automated AI detection and timely alerts encouraged workers to consistently wear their helmets and safety vests throughout the entire shift.
