Intelligent Loco Pilot Driver Assistance System
Existing GPS systems lacked the precision needed to detect train positions at the platform level, making it difficult to provide loco pilots with accurate and reliable positional awareness during operations.
Maintaining consistent connectivity in tunnels and areas with weak network coverage was a persistent challenge, leading to data gaps and communication breakdowns that affected the pilot's situational awareness during transit.
There was no dedicated tamper-proof onboard display to deliver real-time, up-to-date operational information directly to loco pilots throughout the journey.
At the same time, the operations center had no means to monitor live train positions or track schedule adherence in real time, limiting their ability to coordinate with pilots and respond to delays effectively.
A ruggedized Android tablet was developed with a high-brightness display was deployed onboard as the primary interface for loco pilots, providing real-time operational information throughout the journey. A Differential GPS (DGPS) system enabled sub-meter positioning accuracy at the platform level, delivering the precision that standard GPS systems could not achieve.
Continuous connectivity across the rail corridor was maintained through a 5G primary connection with automatic 4G fallback, ensuring uninterrupted data transmission across the network. When travelling through tunnels or areas with no GPS signal, a dead reckoning system took over to maintain continuous position tracking, eliminating data gaps that previously affected pilot situational awareness. The tablet was locked down using Android MDM kiosk mode, running a custom application that prevented tampering while keeping critical operational information consistently accessible to the loco pilot.
Live timetable data was continuously synced through a railway schedule API integration, keeping delay updates and platform information current at all times. All train movement data was fed into a web-based operations portal, giving the operations center a live train map with real-time position tracking and schedule adherence monitoring, enabling faster coordination and more effective response to any delays or disruptions along the route.
Line trials confirmed that sub-meter positioning accuracy at the platform level is achievable using a Differential GPS system, while the automatic 5G to 4G handover kept the device reliably connected throughout the entire route. Dead reckoning ensured continuous position tracking through tunnels, eliminating the data gaps that had previously been a persistent issue.
Loco pilots had access to accurate, real-time operational information at every platform stop, significantly improving their situational awareness during the journey. At the same time, the operations team gained full visibility over every train's live position, speed, and schedule adherence from a single web portal, making it considerably easier to coordinate with pilots, manage delays, and keep services running on schedule.
